Reducing Your Tax Burden

Protecting Our Environment
  • For the first time ever, industry will be required by law to meet tough emission reduction targets as part of our balanced, achievable plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 20% by 2020 and cut air pollution 50% by 2015.
  • A world-leading Chemicals Management Plan to reduce the toxins Canadians are exposed to on a daily basis.
  • Canada will continue to press for truly global participation to cut worldwide GHG emissions in half by 2050.
  • Preserve ecologically sensitive lands, including the creation of the largest freshwater marine protected area in the world.
 
Respect And Fairness For Seniors
  • Delivered over $1 billion in tax relief to seniors including the introduction of pension income-splitting for couples.
  • Created a National Seniors Council to give seniors a voice in the issues that matter to them.
  • Made it easier to apply and qualify for the Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement, and extended CPP benefits to thousands of additional Canadians with a disability.
 
Strong Economy
  • Unemployment is now at its lowest level in 33 years.
  • Our Conservative Government has continued to reduce our national debt, which is now at its lowest level since the 1970’s.
  • Created the new Working Income Tax Benefit to help 1.2 million people over the “welfare wall”.
 
Supporting Cities
  • Our $33 billion, 7-year “Building Canada” plan is the largest investment in infrastructure in Canada since World War II, with over 50% going directly to municipalities and cities like Toronto.
  • A National Transit Strategy to reduce traffic congestion in cities, and help reduce air pollution and the growth of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Investment of $963 million in several “Flow” transit projects in Toronto, $350 million for renewal of the TTC, and $385 million to expand GO transit.
 
Welcoming New Canadians
  • Reduced the landing fee tax by 50%.
  • Created the Foreign Credentials Referral Office to help internationally trained professionals in getting their credentials quickly assessed and recognized.
  • Made it easier for foreign-adopted children to become Canadian citizens.
 
Strong Universal Healthcare
  • Signed Patient Wait-Time Guarantee agreements with all provinces and territories, and provided $612 million in new funding to help provinces reduce patient wait times.
  • Established the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer with $260 million in funding to implement a national cancer strategy, and is delivering a national mental health strategy.
  • Increased funding for new training spaces to address the shortage of nurses and doctors.
 
Tackling Crime
  • Protecting our neighbourhoods by creating stiffer penalties and tougher bail rules for serious gun crimes, and for serious drug offences involving organized crime and violence.
  • Safeguarding our children from exploitation by raising the age of protection from 14 to 16.
  • Fighting the complex and serious problem of identity theft in Canada.
