Town Hall Series – Axel Listens to Etobicoke
2008 ETOBICOKE TOWNHALL MEETINGS
This past winter and spring, Axel Kuhn organized a series of six town hall meetings throughout our riding. The Town Halls discussed issues relevant to Etobicoke Centre and featured prominent expert guest speakers.

Supporting our Seniors

• $1 billion in tax relief to seniors including the introduction of pension income-splitting for couples and the tax free savings account.
• For the first time, Canada has a Secretary of State for Seniors, and a National Seniors Council to give seniors a direct voice in government.
Tackling Crime

Prime Minister Harper has successfully implemented Bill C-2 to:
- Toughen sentencing and restrict bail for those who commit serious gun crimes
- Prevent dangerous, high-risk offenders from offending again and again
- Better protect Canada's children from sexual predators.
Immigration and Helping Our
Newest Canadians Succeed

• In 2007, Canada welcomed 429,649 newcomers, the highest in our history.
• Created the Foreign Credentials Referral Office to get skilled immigrants working and contributing to Canada as quickly as possible.
• Reduced the landing fee tax for new Canadians by 50%. |
Protecting our Environment


• For the first time in Canada, 18% mandatory reductions of greenhouse gases from the biggest polluters by 2010.
• Massive commitment to energy conservation, renewable fuels, alternative energy, and public transit.
Supporting Small Business

• Cut the GST from 7% to 6% to 5% to drive the economy
• Cut small business tax rate to 11% to help our small businesses succeed
• Apprenticeship grants and tax credits to encourage young people to enter the trades.
Building Toronto to Lead Canada


• The $33B Building Canada plan is the largest infrastructure investment in Canada since WWII. Over 50% goes to our cities.
• Part of the federal gas tax is now permanent new funding for municipal transit, at the rate of $1B over 5 years. |
